Choosing the right gasket material is critical for sealing reliability, compliance, and total cost of ownership. Here’s a clear, data-based comparison between EPDM and PTFE gaskets based on established material properties.
- EPDM is a synthetic elastomer (rubber). It offers high elasticity and excellent recovery after compression.
- PTFE is a fluoropolymer plastic (commonly known as Teflon). It is rigid with very low friction and almost no elasticity.
| Property | EPDM Gasket | PTFE Gasket |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature range | Typically –50 °C to +150 °C | Typically –200 °C to +260 °C |
| Chemical resistance | Excellent to water, steam, dilute acids/alkalis, polar solvents; poor to oils, fuels, hydrocarbons | Near-universal (acids, bases, solvents, oils); inert to almost all chemicals |
| Weather / Ozone / UV | Outstanding | Good |
| Flexibility & sealing | High elasticity, good compression-set resistance | Rigid; relies on compression; can show cold flow |
| Friction / Non-stick | Moderate | Extremely low |
| Cost | Lower to moderate | Higher |
| Typical applications | Outdoor/weather sealing, automotive, water/steam systems, HVAC | Aggressive chemicals, high-temperature process, food/pharma where inertness is required |
- Select EPDM when the media is water-based or steam, the environment involves weather/ozone/UV exposure, flexibility and cost efficiency matter, and temperatures stay within its range. It is widely used in automotive sealing, outdoor equipment, and many industrial water systems.
- Select PTFE when extreme chemical resistance, very high or very low temperatures, or non-stick/low-friction performance is required. It is preferred in chemical processing, certain food and pharmaceutical lines, and high-purity applications.
Neither material is universally superior. Matching the gasket to the actual media, temperature, pressure, and mechanical conditions is essential.
At LINGO RUBBER PLASTIC , we manufacture custom EPDM gaskets and related rubber sealing components with full process capability (compression, injection, and transfer molding). Our EPDM products for food-contact applications meet FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 requirements. We also process PTFE products through plastic injection/extrusion and machining, supporting multi-material solutions.
We provide a structured material selection approach covering 14 rubber types with 22 performance dimensions, Shore hardness scales (00/A/D), and supporting international compliance (FDA, SGS, RoHS, REACH, UL, PPAP where applicable). This helps engineers move from requirement to validated material quickly and reduces trial-and-error.
Whether you need weather-resistant EPDM seals for outdoor or automotive use, or chemically inert PTFE components, we can support from material selection and prototype verification through to volume production.
